Today I attended the 2011 Rivals Elite Hoops Showcase in Baton Rouge, LA. This event did not have all of the best players from the state but I did see some of the best young players from Louisiana and from Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia play.
2012 prospects that played well
This Rivals Top 150 rated player had a good day at the showcase. 6'2 2G Darryl Milburn of McKinley HS Baton Rouge, is coming back from a bad ankle injury according to his dad. Darryl is a good ballhandler in the open court and he can hit the mid range or 3-point jumper. Darryl needs to play harder, tougher and make better decisions with ball. He's a good MM- player.
6'3 combo guard Lucas Martin of Riverside Academy in Reserve, LA, played very well at this event. Lucas is a leader on the court. This long and smooth guard hit several 3-point shoots and he made several good defensive plays. He plays hard all game long. MM
6'7 PF P.J. Brown of St. Amant HS, LA, tells us he is not kin to former Louisiana Tech and NBA great P.J. Brown. P.J. is is a long armed player who rebounds and blocks shots well. He like to play with his back to the basket. More work in needed on the offense end and his foot work. LM
6'3 2G Darius Johnson of McKinley HS Baton Rouge, LA, is a good looking player. He is a good athlete with a strong body. He is fast and quick in the open court with the ball and in transition. He needs to finish better around the basket. A player to keep an eye on.
2013
6'1 PG Stan Mays Jr. of Episcopal HS Baton Rouge, LA, is a steady as they go player. Stan makes good decisions with the ball in the open court and passing to an open team mate. This heady player doesn't force the ball. He likes to take his opponent off the dribble to the basket and score. Stay is an ace student in the classroom and he has a high basketball I.Q. too LM/MM-
5'11 combo guard Marvel Madiebo of Jim Hill HS Jackson, MS, is a very good basketball player. Marvel is a good ball handler and he can score in many ways. He has a strong body and he likes to score in the lane or from 15 feet out. He is a good rebounder and he defends well. He has a good upside. MM+
6'8 PF James Thompson of Parkview Baptist HS Baton Rouge, LA, was the tallest players at this event. James is a good defensive player. He runs the court well, but his offensive game needs some work. Once he learns how to score facing the basket and on the blocks lookout! Keep an eye on this one. A late bloomer. LM/MM+
6'1 PG Nigel Bradley of Forest Hill HS Jackson, MS, is an exciting player. This quick and fast guard is an ace shooter who can hit the mid-range and 3-point jumper. This speedy and fast player is a good defender too. MM+
6'5 GF Kaleb Ratliff of Westgate HS New Iberia, LA, is a long armed player with ace hops. Kaleb is a close to the basket player, but we did see him hit a 15 foot jumper. He runs the court well on the break and his likes to play at rim level. A decent defender and rebounder. LM/MM-
2014
The players in the 2014 class IMO were some of the best prospects at this event. It took me a while to warm up to the play of 6'2 2G/P Dominic McGee from Helen Cox HS Gretna, LA, This smooth lefty is a good passer and scorer. This rangy player made several good open court plays. He's a good defender with a huge upside! MM/M
6'3 2G Thomas Guibeau of Sumset HS, LA, is a good athlete and good open court ballhandler. He just moved to Louisiana from Michigan. He is quick and fast and he likes to take the ball to the basket and score. He still needs to work on his jump shot. A good looking player. Don't overlook. MM
6'4 GF Devante Bailey of Southern Lab HS Baton Rouge, LA, is a long and rangy player that scores well in the lane and along the baseline. This long armed player is a good rebounder and shot blocker. He runs the court and scores well on the break. Good upside. MM
6'0 PG Markell Broussard of Port Allen HS, LA, is a quick and fast player who handles the ball well in the open court. Markell is a good shooter from 15 ft out. He is a good passer and he denfends well. He makes good decision with the ball. MM
2015
The best player in the 2015 class was 6'0 PG Charvon Julien of Riverside Academy in Reserve, LA. Charvon is a under control player who makes good decisions with the ball. He is an ace passer and he pushes the ball up the court well. more work is needed on his jump shot, but he does so many other things well on the court. He's a leader and a floor general. MM/M
